Description:

The Yukon Protective Services Division is committed to administer and enforce fire prevention, protection and safety-related programs and support communities and volunteers.  The Fire Marshal’s Office (FMO), while focusing on fire prevention and safety mitigation, is responsible for ensuring as many people are protected with fire suppression and rescue as possible.  This is challenging in a territory where communities are rural and remote, and populations are small.

On December 11, 2020, a fire destroyed the Keno city hotel.  The cause of the fire is still under RCMP investigation.  Keno, with a population under 20, has been unable to recruit and retain volunteer firefighters and the community has not had as organized fire department since 2011.

The Minister of Community Services committed to conducting a review of volunteer fire programs and the Keno situation.
